Life for Liberty
Liberty was only about twelve weeks old when she was rescued but during her brief time on the streets of Memphis, she suffered enough for a lifetime. She was living in the closed dumpster area at the KFC on Elvis Presley Blvd near Winchester, a rough area of Memphis with little kindness to be found for a kitten on her own. She caught a lucky break when an animal-loving woman went through the drive-thru and noticed her, along with the adult tortie in the picture (who has since disappeared ). The nice woman posted about her situation on the Memphis Cat Rescue FB page, along with an offer to try and trap the kitten if a rescue group would agree to take her. Purrfect Match did just that and for the next week she tried multiple times to trap "Liberty" but the little kitten was understandably wary and she didn't make it easy! Finally she got Liberty trapped and we were all so relieved!! Liberty's initial exam showed that one of her femurs had been broken, it's healed now and she just has a slight limp, but we can't imagine how painful that was for her as she tried to survive out there with a broken leg.
The Purrfect Match volunteers got her tucked in safe and snug at our facility (MeowHouse) and dedicated ourselves to the process of healing her tiny, weary body and helping this fierce little street warrior understand that humans are not the enemy. Once she’d had time to decompress, we grouped her with a litter of 3 very friendly kittens and that helped tremendously with her socialization. During her two month stay with us at MeowHouse, we got her tested, vaccinated, spayed and wormed and while Liberty was still shy with new people and in new situations, we felt that she was ready for the next step ~ finding a home.
We made arrangements for Liberty to go to Ten Lives Cat Rescue in RI, where she landed with a very special foster family committed to continuing her socialization and after an initial “settling in” period, Liberty thrived there.
Liberty was given all the patience and love she needed to blossom and after she’d been in Rhode Island about a month, she found her people! This was the happy news we received from Liberty's Ten Lives Cat Rescue foster mom:
"Liberty went home with the sweetest couple who have a kitty friend for her. They fell in love with her and she even let them pet her at the meet and greet, I was so surprised! They checked in after a couple of days and said that a lot of progress has been made with Liberty feeling comfortable in their home. She has been playing, allowing pets and even cuddling!!"
And we received another update after Liberty had been “home” for a month:
“Everything with Liberty (now named Puchka!) is wonderful. She’s a charming little love bug and loves to climb up on the counters She’s a perfect match for our other cat Scion, they play and they cuddle all day!”
What a dream come true for this little girl who went from a battered little wildling trying to survive by a dumpster at KFC on Elvis Presley Blvd to being adored by this obviously very special and cat-loving couple in Rhode Island!
