Amelia

Amelia is one of 6 cats that we rescued from a vacant home in Millington in December 2022. Their owner had passed away several months prior and the cats had been alone in the house since then, surviving on a bag of food brought in by a real estate agent. We don't have any further details, but the house was in atrocious condition, and obviously hadn't been fit for human or pet habitation for quite some time. The process of completely gutting the destroyed home had begun and the cats had to be removed from the premises immediately so we scrambled around and figured out space for them at MeowHouse.

Amelia was in very poor condition when we first got her after what appears to be years of neglect. It was as if her little body had coped as long as it could and then when she was finally in a quiet, clean, caring environment with nutritious food at the ready, she could allow herself a come-apart. We battled digestive issues with uncomfortable gas and bloating, mycoplasma (a parasitic infection of the cat's red blood cells) and a serious URI that we didn't know if she would recover from. After taking her to the vet, we loved her, medicated her and hand-fed her for several weeks and finally Amelia turned the corner and came back to the world of the living! After that it was no holds barred as she chatted happily away and begged for attention!

All of the Purrfect Match volunteers were quite smitten with her and it was a very bittersweet day when she got the opportunity to head up to New England to find her home! Amelia transported to HART of Maine in mid-March and the volunteers there gave her a warm welcome. Within a couple of weeks of her arrival in Maine, Amelia chose her people and we were THRILLED to receive this message (and many of the pics below) from Amelia's new mom Sara!!

"Hi! I wanted to let you know that my husband and I adopted a cat named Amelia on April 1st. She picked us the moment we walked into the friendly cat room at HART! She is so affectionate and talkative and we love her so much already. She has adjusted to her new home very quickly! We have a very chill 15 year old puggle, who is basically indifferent to all other animals but has lived with a cat before. She was wary of him at first but now they greet each other by booping noses. She sleeps in bed with me all night and is just now getting zoomies at random times the past couple days, haha. Thank you for your part in rescuing her, she has found her forever home and we love her so much! "
